Workshop & Hackathon Series Summary

Join us for a fun and educational experience where young minds come together to learn about community safety and security, gain tech skills, and engineer a real-world application with guidance from tech experts.

With each session building on the previous, our workshops will provide hands-on learning while our hackathon sessions will guide participants in applying what they learned to design and develop a software application.

This is a great opportunity to share your skills and expertise in support of young people excited to learn and implement technology focused on enhancing community safety, security, and privacy.

 

Workshop Goals

To educate participants on community safety, data privacy, and security, with a focus on surveillance tech and software development. Participants will also get hands-on experience in designing and developing an application focused on community safety and security.

The workshop & hackathon series is designed for youth 12-24 years of age.

Course Structure and Outline

  • There will be a total of five (5) sessions.
  • Each session builds on the previous one, with hands-on planning and designing throughout the series.
  • The series emphasizes collaboration and team-building while enhancing tech skills and knowledge about safety, security, and privacy.

SESSION 1: Introduction to Safety, Security, and Privacy

  • OBJECTIVE: To introduce participants to the concepts of community safety, data privacy and security.

SESSION 2: Data Privacy and Security

  • OBJECTIVE: To provide participants with practical knowledge and tools to protect their personal privacy and security in the digital age.

SESSION 3: Connecting Concept to Implementation

  • OBJECTIVE: To explore how the principles of privacy and security inform and influence the design of software applications.

SESSION 4: User Experience (UX) and Design with Security Principles

  • OBJECTIVES: To introduce participants to design principles in relation to security and privacy, basic coding concepts with hands-on coding activities, and begin security camera engineering with Raspberry Pi.
